Sustainability at The Melbreak – Reduce, Re-use, Recycle.

The Melbreak Hotel is constantly looking at ways to be more sustainable, making environmental, social, and economic improvements within the business.

Because of this we have implemented the following to reduce our carbon footprint:

  • Wood chip biomass boiler installed for all heating and hot water.
  • 6 electric car charging stations are available for use by guests, staff, and visitors to the area.
  • Solar panels.
  • Our energy supplier, British Gas, provides us with Zero Carbon Electricity.
  • Energy efficient LED light fittings.
  • Guest bathrooms now only have showers to reduce water usage, and have low or dual flush toilets.
  • We encourage guests to adopt a responsible towel recycling program.
  • We have removed the use of individual use plastics and toiletries from guest bathrooms.
  • We use a local company, Pure Lakes, who produce plant-based sustainable skincare.
  • Correspondence is sent by email.
  • Meadow flower seeds have been scattered to encourage wildlife.
  • We actively encourage recycling and composting.
  • We minimise waste through inventive, seasonal menus.

In addition to the above, we plan to develop a kitchen garden to include the following:

  • Herbs, fruits, berries, salad leaves and edible flowers.
  • A bug hotel.
  • Partnerships with local schools.

We carefully choose our suppliers for their eco credentials or their locality. Companies with electric delivery vehicles are our preferred choice.

In conclusion, these practices will lessen our overall environmental impact, and promote a greener, cleaner future for us all.

This is not the end of our sustainability journey, only the beginning!
