Sustainability at The Melbreak

Many of us would like our travel to be more environmentally friendly, and at The Melbreak we’re keen to support that desire and to do our bit for the environment. Our family-run hotel has made great strides to improve sustainability, and we will continue to do so, with environmental, social, and economic improvements implemented across the whole business.

Eco Credentials

  • A wood chip biomass boiler has been installed and is now used for all of our heating and hot water.
  • Six Fuuse electric car charging stations are available in our car park for use by guests, staff, and visitors to the area.
  • Working with Go Low Carbon, we installed 80 solar panels in the grounds, helping to reduce our emissions at a rate equivalent to planting over 6,700 trees.
  • Our energy supplier, British Gas, provides us with low-carbon electricity.
  • Energy efficient LED light fittings have been installed across the building.
  • Most guest bathrooms now have showers instead of baths to help reduce water usage. The bathrooms also have low or dual flush toilets.
  • We encourage guests to adopt a responsible towel recycling program.
  • Individual use plastics and toiletries have been removed from guest bathrooms and replaced with refillable alternatives.
  • All toiletries are provided by a local company, Pure Lakes, who produce plant-based, sustainable skincare.
  • Correspondence is sent by email to reduce unnecessary printing.
  • Meadow flower seeds have been scattered across our grounds in order to encourage wildlife and biodiversity.
  • Both guests and staff are actively encouraged to recycle and compost.
  • We minimise waste through inventive seasonal menus, using local produce wherever possible.
  • Suppliers are carefully chosen for their own eco credentials or their locality. Companies with electric delivery vehicles are our preferred choice.

Coming Soon: The Kitchen Garden

One of our most exciting upcoming projects is the development of a kitchen garden. Here, herbs, fruits, berries, salad leaves and edible flowers will be grown for use in our restaurant’s seasonal menus. The kitchen garden will also encourage insects, birds and other important wildlife through installation of a bug hotel and a variety of beneficial plants.

Schools and the Community

To support the local community and our educational goals, we would love to partner with local schools to help with our kitchen garden project, as well as other future environmental projects. If your school would be interested in getting involved, please contact us to discuss possibilities.

Future Plans

When it comes to the environment, there is always more we can do, which is why we’re planning for the future too. As well as the kitchen garden project, we will continue to make improvements that will lessen our overall environmental impact and promote a greener, cleaner future for us all.
